Having a central city Romantic Getaway in Wellington is possible thanks to the vast array of eateries, entertainment venues and activities abound.
This Christmas will be our third spent in Wellington. We have also had short stays in between as well.
If our centrally located Romantic Getaway complete with balcony spa pool is not available then we recommend heading to the recently refurbished Naumi hotel on Cuba Street/Dunlop Terrace where you will find a sensory wonderland unlike anything you have ever seen.
I have always been passionate about finding quirky and interesting places to visit and Wellington does not disappoint.
If you only have 48 hours to spend for a Romantic Getaway in Wellington, here are my recommendations on what to do:
With hundreds of eateries, many of them award winning, you can easily eat your way around the vast cultures Wellington is best known for.
For a quirky breakfast bite to eat, head to the Fix & Fogg window down a colourful laneway where you will find the best PB & J on loaves of locally made sourdough.
Sitting beside the window on a little stool in the lane, surrounded by historical buildings eating your toast, is sure to be something quite unlike anything you have ever done before.
Don’t forget to stop by the chocolate factory just around the corner where you can see the chocolate churning right before your very eyes. Their floats are not too bad either.
If bagels are your thing then head down another lane to Best Ugly Bagels where fun is a priority and your order is announced to all.
After breakfast head down to the museum on Queens Wharf to learn all the fascinating stories of Wellingtons history all housed within a beautiful 1892 heritage building.
As one of NZ’s only running funicular railways, in the heart of Lambton Quay, you will find the Cable Car that takes you from the city to the summit and the Kelburn lookout.
The lookout platforms are the best spots to take a scenic photo of the city and beyond. A great Romantic spot to take a picture postcard photo with the two of you in the foreground.
Once at the summit take a Romantic stroll around the botanic and rose gardens and either take the cable bar back to the city or walk back down instead.
For lunch we often head to Courtenay Place where one of my must haves is the Chicken Katsu Donburi from One Sushi. It is so good I have to have one every time we are in Wellington. Russell’s must have is a kebab from Kebabs on Queen.
After lunch it’s time for a tasting and Wellington is lucky enough to have one brewery and one winery in the central city. If gin is your thing then there are restaurants that offer tasting paddles too.
As dinner time rolls around the choices are endless and it all depends on what you feel like having at the time.
Whether it is a harbour side dining experience along the wharf or a cultural experience along colourful Cuba Street, be sure to make some room for dessert as a visit to Duck Island is a must.
On our recent trip to Wellington, businesses along Cuba Street were experiencing sporadic power cuts due to impending road works.
Having wanted to try a bubble tea from Hi Tea since we arrived, it would seem we would have to wait until our next trip as they were closed due to one such power cut. We popped down to Noahs Ark Teahouse instead and were not disappointed.
With another trip to Wellington coming up at Christmas time, we are planning to do a few more activities that we haven’t had a chance to do yet.
These include a ride along the waterfront in a Croc Bike, (although while I plan to sit back, relax and let Russell do all the pedaling I think he has other ideas), a trip to Wellington Zoo (where we might have a close encounter with a fury kind), a tour around Weta Workshop, and even a trip out to Somes Island.
For breakfast on your second morning we highly recommend Southern Cross on Abel Smith Street, or Fidels on Cuba Street. They have the most amazing meals and their presentation is beyond expectation.
I must also give a shout out to Mama Brown where her chicken and waffles and milkshakes are to die for. I have yet to find anything similar and the decor in the restaurant is both quirky and fun.
